Conferences bring people together—they create deeper connections in just a few days than social networks ever could and can provide valuable insights into the industry.
Attending a conference is almost always worthwhile, whether to meet new people or reconnect with familiar faces! But its value also depends on the cost, location, and your ability to connect—some network effortlessly, while others find it more challenging.
While networking is a key part of every conference, the quality of content varies significantly. Many organizers invest heavily in venues and overpriced conference service providers, but often cut corners when it comes to content. Many coworking events take a different approach. However, this practice is still common across the conference industry, including some that focus on coworking.
Speakers often receive no fee and may even have to cover their own travel and accommodation costs. Despite this, many are eager to participate, as conferences provide a valuable platform to promote their businesses. Some companies even pay for the opportunity to present during sessions. As a result, some event organizers prioritize ‘free' or 'sponsored’ speakers over ‘paid’ experts.
Advertising instead of expertise?
Unpaid speakers can still deliver valuable insights, and well-known CEOs or industry leaders are particularly sought after, allowing participants to engage with them. A limited number of such speakers can add value to an event!
However, free speakers often deliver subjective or promotional presentations. The real issue arises when organizers allocate little to no budget for independent experts who could provide neutral, well-researched perspectives on key topics.
To help you better understand what to expect, the infoboxes now include new categories: the share of promotional content and whether independent experts receive financial support for the work they put into delivering valuable insights. This is especially relevant when ticket prices are high. For that reason, conferences with lower prices are excluded from these categories.
Coworking is not just about working together or side by side; it can also mean cooperating toward a broader goal. To reflect this, another new category recognizes organizers’ efforts in supporting collaborative initiatives that benefit the coworking industry beyond cross-promotion.
