Da Nang is centrally located in Vietnam and has become one of the most popular destinations for digital nomads in Southeast Asia in recent years.
The city offers a tropical climate, long sandy beaches, and low living costs—at least for those earning a Western income.
Many digital nomads come here to combine work with a laid-back, summery lifestyle. To meet their needs, a growing number of coworking spaces have opened in Da Nang, making remote work easier.
The city was already well-equipped for tourism long before digital nomads arrived, providing plenty of advantages. It has well-developed transport links, including trains, flights, and domestic buses.
The well-developed infrastructure also allows digital nomads to quickly establish time-saving routines while taking advantage of the diversity and flexibility of the many facilities in Da Nang.
The variety of restaurants, cafés, and bars is huge. Alongside the many seafood spots, there are plenty of places serving vegan and vegetarian food. Getting around is easy with national taxi services like Xanh SM, Be or the more common Grab among international travelers. There are also many gyms and other venues for indoor and outdoor activities—from pickleball to surfing.
And many of its hotels lower their rates even further during the northern hemisphere’s winter months when occupancy drops. It’s not all one-sided though. Digital nomads bring business to the local tourism industry during its quieter season.
Many budget and boutique hotels, apartments, restaurants, and bars are locally owned, ensuring that more of the money spent stays within the local economy rather than going to corporate chains.
Da Nang itself is not the most picturesque city in Vietnam but largely resembles a typical Vietnamese metropolis. However, thanks to its central location, it serves as an ideal home base for day trips to Hoi An, My Son, over the Hai Van Pass to Hue, and many other noteworthy destinations.
Yet, what matters most for digital nomads is how easy it is to connect with new like-minded people in Da Nang. The city's coworking spaces are the best place for that. There are also plenty of Facebook and WhatsApp groups for activities like sports, dining, or bar meetups. Some groups can also help you connect with locals.
Facebook is still popular in Vietnam, so searching there is a good start. Another option is scanning QR codes in Digital Nomad hotspots to join private WhatsApp groups.
Where do digital nomads live?
Most digital nomads stay on the island between the Han River and the South China Sea, especially in An Thượng close to the Mỹ Khê Beach.
Its southern area is home to the more touristy Western Quarter, though anyone can walk out of it within minutes. Quieter neighborhoods like Man Thai, at the foot of the mountains in the north, offer a more relaxed atmosphere but have fewer supermarkets, restaurants, and gyms.
Despite its growing tourism, Da Nang still feels much calmer than Vietnam’s much larger cities, Ho Chi Minh City or Hanoi. It is also an important industrial and port city, though most digital nomads and tourists barely notice this since the port is far from the island’s beaches.
It’s a different story with the many new buildings. They are being constructed in various places, especially in popular areas, constantly changing the cityscape.
Stunning views from hotels or apartments can quickly turn into a view facing a firewall. But just like anywhere else, construction can (temporarily) impact its immediate surroundings and seldom the entire city.
When do most digital nomads come?
Digital nomads are like migratory birds. They move on as soon as a place becomes less comfortable and better conditions appear elsewhere.
Da Nang has a tropical climate with a dry season from January to August. The temperatures are mildest at the beginning of the year, ranging from 20 to 25 degrees Celsius, but still pleasantly warm.
In spring, Thailand experiences its Burning Season, with agricultural fires causing heavy air pollution, especially in northern regions like Chiang Mai. Bangkok also faces more often smog during this period, as temperature inversions trap pollutants from traffic and industry. In contrast, Da Nang benefits from the ocean, which keeps the air fresh year-round.
Because of this, Da Nang established itself as part of the main Southeast Asian route, serving as a longer stopover between Thailand (e.g., Chiang Mai or Bangkok) and Indonesia (Bali) or similar places.
February to May is peak season for digital nomads and coworking spaces
The digital nomad season in Da Nang starts in December and peaks between mid-February and mid-May as temperatures rise.
Coworking spaces can reach capacity during peak season
During these months, some coworking spaces in Da Nang reach full capacity. If you plan to stay longer, booking a monthly membership ensures hassle-free access. While day and weekly passes can sometimes be reserved in advance, monthly members usually get priority when spaces reach their limit, helping to maintain the existing community.
::: This year, digital nomads are getting their own festival. The Vietnam Nomad Fest will take place in Da Nang from March 14 to 20, 2025. It will be followed by another week in Hoi An from March 21 to 27, where the theme shifts to well-being. You can still use the code DESKMAG to get 10% off your ticket for the second week! :::
From May to August, temperatures in Da Nang rise significantly. As a result, many nomads from the Northern Hemisphere leave during this period, often heading to destinations like Bali or returning to their home country. At the same time, more nomads from the Southern Hemisphere arrive, escaping their subtropical winter.
Low season for nomads, high season for tourists
While fewer digital nomads stay in Da Nang during these months, the city fills up with beach tourists from across Asia. The summer months turn Da Nang into an overcrowded vacation hotspot, lasting until temperatures drop and typhoon season begins.
During this time, many coworking spaces struggle to stay profitable and often operate at half capacity. However, this is usually enough to cover costs until the next peak season.
